Bei Eintritt einer Krankheitsphase während eines laufenden Semesters kann zum Teil auch dann noch eine Beurlaubung erfolgen. Die Zahl der Urlaubssemester ist je nach Beurlaubungsgrund bzw. universitärer oder hochschulischer Regelung zum Teil begrenzt. Ein Urlaubssemester zählt nicht als Fachsemester, aber als Hochschulsemester. Da der Status „Studierende*r“ auch während der Beurlaubung bestehen bleibt, ohne jedoch zu studieren, muss der Semesterbeitrag auch für ein Urlaubssemester gezahlt werden. Während der Beurlaubung dürfen in der Re-gel keine oder nur unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen Studien- und Prüfungsleistungen erbracht werden. Urlaubssemester können Auswirkungen auf die Studienfinanzierung, den Aufenthaltsstatus, die Kinderbetreuung und weitere Bereiche haben. Studierende sollten sich daher vor einer Beurlaubung beim Beratungszentrum Soziales & Internationales – BeSI des Studierendenwerks Hamburg und bei den Beratungs-stellen bzw.
